An up-to-date business plan is important because it:

· sets out to potential investors what your business intends to do now and in the future

· provides an internal operating plan for your business based on its mission and goals

· will increase your chances of success by introducing an ongoing business-planning cycle

· brings key people from the business together to assess, plan and communicate goals

A Business Plan should cover a defined period, usually a financial year, or a 3 year strategic horizon.  Certain events may trigger a review of your strategic objectives, such as a competitor or major customer going out of business, but generally the key aims and objectives should hold true for two to three years.

Business planning should be part of a rolling process, with regular assessment of your performance against the Plan and revising your forecast if necessary.
